The Book of Pentacles: Wellcome 4639

This manuscript was penned by Robert Cross Smith, more famous under the pen-name Raphael. 

We have some quite intriguing sections but of special interest to us, the pentacles with explanations, closely associated with the 9 Candaries, which I shall tackle separately.

As my friend QiRui Huo points out, the most likely source for this is the Folger Manuscript, which was in Cross possession, and that will be my next article.

There are a total of 22 figures on fols.109r-111v, followed by two figures that are unnumbered and seem to be unrelated, which I will not append. The 22 pentacles are numbered 1 through 20, the 3rd and 4th  pentacles being the reverses of pentacles 1 and 2. Yes, magic is complicated like that...

1. This Sign gives the Love of Both Sexes. 

2. This Sign carry with you, and all shall rejoice in you.

3. This Sign, born about thee, no Enemy or Evil shall prevail against thee. 

4. This Sign carry with thee and no one shall hate thee, but all will be placid to thee. 

5. Against Enemys, visible and Invisible and Demons.

6. That you may not fear Enemys, but fear God.

7. This is the Infallible Name of God which Aaron took in the Mount, against all dangers.

8. This Sign, carry with thee, and all Aerial and Infernal Spirits will obey you. 

9. Behold the Cross of the Lord!

10. This Sign avails against all Dangers, and will make a Man pleasing. 

11. This Sign carry with thee and thou shalt not fear an Enemy nor a demon. 

12. This Sign stops malignant Tongues and begets Love. 

13. By this Sign, no one will have power against thee.

14. By this Sign, all powers and Infernal Spirits will obey thee!

15. In whatsoever day thou seest this Sign, thou shalt be freed from evill.  

16. Through this Sign, all infernal Spirits and Powers obey.

17. This Sign carry with thee and in War, thou shalt not fear an Enemy.

18. This Sign carry with thee, and thou shalt be freed from all fear. 

19. Against all Evils of the Matrix and to assist pregnancy. 

20. The Seal of the Earth.
